All About Ruby Jewelry

The ruby is a red mineral, and is members of the corundum family. They are a gemstone, and come in a lot of different shades. This greatly adds to the splendor of rubies. Natural rubies have shades from pinkish red to dark, rich and deep red. They usually have a purplish undertone. Because of the many variations when it comes to colors and shades, they bring an interesting and unique look to the wearer. Ruby is one of the world’s favorite gemstones. It represents love, passion and warfare. Rubies register as a nine on the Mohs scale of hardness. Ruby jewelry are almost as hard as diamonds and this is the reason why they are so durable.

Most rubies are heat-treated, this is used to improve the clarity and the color of the gemstone. They are sometimes coated, but this has the tendency to wear off over time. The most beautiful rubies are thought to be Burmese rubies. Most rubies come from countries like Madagascar, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Kenya. However, the quality greatly varies, and depends on where it is found. A variety of ruby is called cabochons, which are more translucent. Synthetic rubies are available, and are much more affordable than natural rubies.
